Large luxury SUVs tend to be more about style than substance. Here’s one that’s different, the 2015 version of Volkswagen’s second generation Touareg. Wolfsburg’s luxury tank has emerged from its mid-life refresh with sharper-edged lights (bi-xenons with LED running elements) and re-designed bumpers with slimmer, wider grilles. The idea is to make the Touareg look bigger, more imposing, and more expensive. This second generation Touareg, shares its underpinnings and mechanicals with the Porsche Cayenne, they are actually built in the same factory. Inside the boot, there’s 580-litres of luggage space on offer, there’s plenty of space for heads, legs and knees, particularly if you take advantage of the fact that the seats recline for greater comfort on longer journeys. And use the facility to prioritise either leg or luggage room by sliding the rear chairs back and forth.
Propelled by 3.0 V6 TDI power, this diesel unit solely matched to permanent 4WD and an eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox. This particular car has the most powerful engine option the 262PS unit with a thumping 580Nm of torque. VW’s powertrain magicians have unlocked a 17bhp power bump over the pre-facelift Touareg, meaning it’ll hit 62mph in 7.3 seconds and 140mph. However, thanks to a friction-reducing ‘decoupling’ system that disconnects the engine from the transmission when you’re coasting, to erase engine braking, fuel efficiency is up from 39.2mpg to 42.8mpg.
This Touareg is packed with features and optional extras:
Black Vienna Leather in Titan Black
Deep Black Pearl Effect Paint
Tarragona 20” Alloy Wheels
Air suspension CDC (Continuous Damping Control) offers excellent ride comfort, with a choice of three settings: Sport, Comfort or Normal, allowing you to choose the driving style that you require. The Touareg can also be raised so it can provide up to approximately 300mm of ground clearance, allowing you to overcome larger than normal obstacles. To ensure easier and more convenient loading and unloading the rear can be lowered from the standard height by up to 50mm.
RNS 850 Connect touch-screen navigation/ DAB radio system provides you with the latest traffic information directly from the internet, enabling you to plan the best route. The photo display makes orientation easier and Google Street View™ displays many roads as 360° panoramic images from the driver’s perspective.
The control panel in the boot automatically releases the rear seat backrest, and also lowers the rear of the vehicle for easier loading and unloading. Rear seats can be moved lengthways and the backrest inclined to three different angles. When moved forward, this increases the boot volume from 580 to 679 litres.
The electronic tyre pressure monitoring system keeps you informed about the air pressure of each tyre via the multifunction display, warning you of any changes.
Area View’s front, rear and side cameras provide a 360 degree exterior view around your Touareg, providing a bird’s-eye view to the front and enabling you to see around left and right hand corners to an angle of over 90 degrees. Area View’s reversing camera provides a view of the area behind, superimposed lines advise you of the path you should take when reversing, ensuring you avoid obstacles below eye level.
